The week I am doing this page, the Nascar Winston Cup drivers are at Watkins Glen International for the Global Crossing @ The Glen. It was at this race in 1991 that J.D. McDuffie was killed in a terrible crash at the track. I have seen the news photos of the accident and was watching it on the satellite feed on TV. To me it was the day NASCAR Died, just as in Don McClean's song "American Pie" the day the music died. It took me a few years to finally get back into racing as I had been. Luckily for me a chance to crew and meet some Winston Cup drivers helped me. This years untimely deaths of Adam Petty and Kenny Irwin have brought the events of that day to mind. If only there had been the sand traps and barriers that exist at the track today J.D. might still be with us. We must also not forget another driver that basically ended his career at the same time, Jimmy Means. After being in the accident Jimmy never really drove much any more. I beleive it was because of the accident. Jimmy Means is still very much evolved in Winston Cup racing but not as a driver. On that day in 1991 two people were standing in that corner taking photos. The person taking the photos was at her first Winston Cup race. These people are Jill and Dave Groves of Hyde Park, Pa.. They have sent me copies of three of the photos and some Newspaper clippings. I want to share them with everyone. Thank you Jill and Dave. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() © TZ Enterprises 2000 - 2003 |
