"I took this photo at Bristol at the night race in '82. This was before Bristol became the stadium that it is today, The car is a Pontiac. The bottom is blue and the top is gold. The wheels are white. You are viewing the passenger side of the car. It is sponsored by Bailey Excavating. The #'s are the gold reflective kind. The 0 has peeled off, but you can plainly see a white outline. He drove the car in the race this way! This picture was taken in the infield. It was taken early Sat. morning before the race on Sat. night. He started 27th and finished 22nd. I was working on the pit crew of a little known driver at the time. I was working for a young man named Darryl Sage. We were generally a 15th place car. We always had to pit on the backside. It was different back there. It was almost as if there were two races going on. The faster cars in the front pits and then the guys like us and J.D. and James Hylton and Rick Newsome and several of the other "independents". Everyone was real nice and always ready to help each other. This was only our 2nd Winston Cup race. Several of the drivers and crew members (from the back pits) stopped by to introduce themselves and to let us know to stop by if we needed something. J.D. was one of the first. We had pitted by him at our first race at Nashville, so he remembered us. Well. lo and behold, we needed a grease gun. Our car owner sent me looking. Guess who had a grease gun? J.D.! And of course, he was more than willing to loan it to me. He told me that when we were finished, if there was no one around to just lay it on the back of his truck. That's what I did. A little later he stopped by, just to talk and see if we were having a problem. He was a class act! We ran 3 more races that year and he was always stopping by! He was a racer! It was men like him that made Winston Cup what it is today!"
